Hey you, I’m super psyched to write this particular post, it’s been too long. One minute it’s like I’m going to be able to write a new post today and then the next thing I know, I get really caught up in school work and all that.
Anyway I’m not going to beat around the bush at all, I basically just want to tell you my perception of religion in Nigeria (mostly) and in the world at large. Most of the things and instances I’d give here are based off Christianity because I’m more familiar with Christianity than any other religion, kapish?π.
Why do people belong to a particular religious group?
It’s simple, you are in a world where things happen spontaneously, sad things, good things and even extraordinarily unexplainable things people call coincidences and in the midst of such situations, you seek an explanation. Why is this happening?, what caused such a spontaneous reaction?, why and how do I exist? And also humans want a supreme being to give them some form of hope for a better life or a supernatural afterlife that leaves you doing things to make sure you end up there.
I came across this tweet on Twitter, the person who tweeted was angry with God apparently. She said things that pretty much made sense but she called God a psychopath which was obviously wrong.

What is religion
Religion is the belief in a particular system of faith and worship.

Religion to an extent provides answers to the above questions and all of that. I actually don’t really like talking about religion because people get things mixed up and make it seem like I’m an atheist π₯΄. But here I’ve typed soπ, nobody to argue with me while I typed .
One thing with Nigerians is that we are too religious, I’m not saying it’s bad to be but some situations require logic. Let me give an example; I experienced a convulsing child in a bus one day, when the child started convulsing, the first thing his mother thought to do was to start praying in tongues π€¦π½♀️ (for those who don’t know, praying in tongues is a spiritual language most Christians use to converse with God). So instead of acting fast, she rather thought it was smart to pray first.
It was other passengers who came to the child’s aid. How smart, eh?
I came across this tweet on Twitter, the person who tweeted was angry with God apparently. She said things that pretty much made sense but she called God a psychopath which was obviously wrong.
Anyway she made really valid points, she asked questions about the Old Testament and things in the Bible that just didn’t add up.
Just Incase you don’t know or you are in denial, there are so many things in the Bible, Christianity and religion as a whole that don’t add up.
That won’t make me stop believing in God though but I think it’s only human to ask questions when things don’t add up, I mean that’s why God gave you a brain. So I absolutely hate it when people say don’t question the Bible or God and all, It’s already annoying enough that he isn’t right in front of me to give me answers.
Moving back to the Twitter story, I went through most of the comments under her tweet, it was filled with people saying things like God forgive me for viewing this tweet and people insulting her, this made me realize one thing.
We have been groomed so much not to question God and Christianity that when someone comes with valid and reasonable questions or points to validate some things about it, we Christians don’t give or don’t have a good answer, we’d rather bring a random verse from The Bible to attack the person or insult them.
My point is we weren’t groomed to lay good points when we have to “defend” God.π€·π½♀️ππ½♀️π’
Another thing about religion, which is very common to most is that, some members of one religion openly disrespect other people’s religions. It doesn’t matter if I’m a traditional worshipper, a buddhist, a metal worshipper or what not, it gives you no right to disrespect what I choose to believe in, don’t be backward!
I attended a church service once where the pastor who was preaching, referred to Muslims as unbelievers who would perish.

Why in the world would you say such, you can pass your message without including and insulting Muslims dammit π€·π½♀️π’. I was super irritated, till today I avoid that church. I won’t be a part of rubbishing someone’s belief.
To be totally honest, I feel religion has blinded many people to rational thinking, you can practice your faith without being numb to simple reasoning and common sense.

I mean I met someone who told me I’d go to hell because I wear trousers, hair extensions and jewelry. Like you really think I’m going to hell because of that? I was like girllllll if I’m going to hell because of the way I choose dress, then you are following me to hell with your judgementmental ass. She was just looking confused.
The basis of my post is this, respect any religion, whether their doctrines agree with yours or not, the same way you won’t want Anyone to disrespect you and your Religion.
If you are going to have a religious argument, have your facts and points right, don’t be an ignorant lot. Thank you for coming to my ted talk ππΌπ

This post really gave me joy...I was once a strong believer until I started asking questions that no one could give answers to like ..which of this religious belief is actually going to lead us to paradise...now I don’t see any reason to go to church because all them fake ass judgemental people there...all I believe is there is a God that loves me...that’s all I need... nice one Erika
