Dear you, “YOU’RE A WONDERFUL PERSON & I LOVE YOU” ; The power of a compliment

“I met a girl during my first year in the university.

She sat alone on a bench. She had this dark cloud-like aura circling her presence and her face was steadfast in its confused state.

I walked up to her, not knowing what pushed me to.

I told her she looked really nice and I liked the color of her braids, they suited her so well and I didn’t know why she was looking confused but I believed she had everything it takes to conquer what was troubling her.

She smiled with teary eyes and thanked me. She added that my telling her all that I did was the first positive thing to happen to her in weeks.

I saw her few weeks after that, she was looking better, she had this seemingly brand new glow and a child-like free spirit attached to her. She hugged me, told me how she went home feeling a lot better the first time we met.

She explained that times when she decided she was going to give up, she thought of me and the things I said to her and that gave her a sense of solace. She found peace in knowing that someone believed in her, even if it was a stranger.

I doubt I had ever been that emotional about a stranger’s life. Happy butterflies found their way into my belly, their joy being a celebration of my helping her through something she believed was overwhelming.

This experience improved my view and attitude towards complimenting and sincere words of affirmation.

Forwarding to the present, myself and this young lady are great friends. Today I woke up to a text from her, it read, “You’re a wonderful person and I love you.”

It is not unusual that we are ignorant and undermining of how deep our words go. Regrettably, the habit of complimenting is completely absent in most of us, lost in the buzz of our everyday living, thus, refashioning a should be convention into a luxury.

“Too often, we underestimate the power of a touch, smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”  ~ LEO BUSCAGLIA

Complimenting is an art of reaching the soul through words.

A single compliment is a nuzzle to the human soul, it sinks to depths that leaves the complimented’s spirit happy. Would it not be beautiful to make someone feel this good?

It is imperative to know that I am not only referring to compliments about an individual’s physical appearance because in a world where superficiality is greatly adored, it is also nice to use words that praise the individual’s innermost endearing attributes. It could be their personality, psyche and even intellect.

Complimenting is a wonderful gift that not only benefits the recipient but also the giver. I’d explain this using the ‘you get what you give’ mantra.

Basically, the energy you give is what you receive. So, if you’re one who is a sincere complimenter, you’re most likely to always receive compliments as well.

Don’t get me wrong though, you do not go about giving compliments for the purpose of receiving some back, that wreaks of selfishness and defeats the whole essence of complimenting.

Giving sincere compliments will leave the giver experiencing  a wonderful sense of fulfillment, knowing that they made someone else feel better.

A compliment to you might simply be words strung together but to the receiver, they mean a whole lot.

When you give sincere compliments, you give gifts, parceled up by your words. Who doesn’t like a well wrapped up gift?

Hope you’re taking care of you and social distancing...
